This section of literature has no big
connection. Some is political, some is poetry, some are stories about Indians. These pieces were all written during the same
time frame, and that’s the only connection. The Scarlet Letter is less religious and more political, which ties into
the political writings of Ben Franklin and the Declaration of Independence.
Rain Dance:
The stories about the Indians were, well, weird.
One story dealt with the Indians proving to the white-man that they don’t want or need their help. The stories dealt
with fear of the white-man, along with the attraction of men and women. Stories of family problems, such as abuse, alcohol,
and abandonment. The poems were the part of the Indian stories I liked best, because they were just short chants to treat
illness and such. Those were the most practical in my opinion.
Kite Flying:
In
Ben Franklin’s autobiography, his letters are written to his son, and they explain his family. It lets William know
exactly where he's from, what his father was like and such.
I thought it was cool how he founded the first library.
I keep finding myself trying to remember what all I learned in history last year, what all Franklin
did in the revolution.
He was a pretty important face in American history; and it's cool to see he didn't come from a
big, rich, powerful family - he made a legacy for himself. Not only was Franklin
great with politics, he was also an amazing scientist. Which is what I like Franklin
for. He was a man of man fields.
Able ?
The Scarlet Letter has gone from a religious, punishment story to a scientific, repentance story.
The town is hypocritical now. They went from hating Hester to accepting her now. Chillingsworth
is pushing Dimmsdale to insanity it seems, trying to get him to admit to being Pearls father, as he suspects. Dimmsdale has
admitted to himself that Pearl is his, but is not yet willing
to face society with it. Hester is now able to do things in society because the town’s people now like her, they’ve
even made her “A” stand for “able”. If they truly accept her, why not just let her take the “A”
off her clothing? It’s also funny how the town is viewing the minister
as a symbol of holiness, even though he has Pearl. As Dimmsdale
gets sicker and sicker, his popularity in the town increases.
This
section of American Literature seems to have shied away from religion, and is now political and scientific. The politics of
Indians versus the white-man. Great Political leaders and documents. Science and repentance versus religion and punishment
in the Scarlet Letter. Though the plots in the documents are greatly different, there is a far-less religious overtone in
the writing of this time.
